City Focus New Orleans

My love for New Orleans began as a teenager reading Anne Rice novels. The New Orleans she had created was mystical and transcendent, full of decay but itself immune to death. Her novels had created something so real to me that my first time visiting was like coming home. I knew the warmth of a cup of café au lait on a cold night, the blare of trumpets on street corners, even the stench of the French Quarter.

The top tourist attractions in New Orleans – Part 6

New Orleans is a city that mixes elements of Old South charm, French architecture, and modern ingenuity. Because the city is a cultural mixture, it is one of the most interesting place in the United States to tour. There are so many things to see that it is often hard to create a comprehensive itinerary, even for those familiar with the city. However, the top tourist attractions in New Orleans fit the vacation needs of adults as well as families.

Big Easy Currents

Banks holding muddy Mississippi water-

River, your strong currents invite me

But the pull of another current wins.

Steps over the trolley tracks

The Saturday crowds stroll by

An occasional jazz note hits the ears

A messy beignet hits the lips.

It is the French quarter awakening-

3:00pm and the children with

Their mommies, strollers, and tourist cameras

start to disappear.

The current is changing, for the night

is soon to arrive.

Dressed. Dressed for the rhythms, the beats

Celebrating Mardi Gras in post – Part 1

New Orleans may never be the same. In the hurricanes of 2005, the city has suffered a lot of damage. That damage was not just structural.

Many people’s spirits were damaged. When you consider the people left behind and those that fled the city, many will never return. That city was not good to them and if they were relocated, moving back may be impossible.

If you visit the French Quarter now, it may look the same structurally, but the people will

New Orleans - French Quarter: Pontalba Buildings

Even if the reinforcement and restructuring of the levies were complete, to the best of man’s abilities, no one can ever be prepared for a major hurricane or any kind of natural disaster that looms. To be prepared, suggests to have an inordinate sense of confidence that all is well and thus speak, as it were, to say, “Bring it on. I’m ready and nothing can touch me!” Does any human have that kind of confidence, especially

Actually Sixth Street is kind of a dump now.

Many people in America have heard of Sixth Street in Austin Texas. Some have compared it to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Others have said it reminds them of Times Square. I think it would be correct to say that it really does not resemble either of those. The current version of Sixth Street is quite different from what it was originally. Currently Sixth Street is full of those

A rainy day on Bourbon Street, New Orleans

You only have to visit the French Quarter in New Orleans to get a sense of the community spirit among the residents of this part of the city. The residents appear to known each other, and there is a true spirit of neighborliness about the place.
This is a thriving community, and commercially strong, with active neighborhood associations putting pressure on their city leaders to provide an increasing number of amenities. Where in other large cities there is a disconnect

Reflections upon returning to New Orleans

The French Market In New Orleans, Sometime Between 1900-1910

I am not afraid to say that the time I spent living in New Orleans was some of the best of my life. I’m still close with the friends I made there; Mardi Gras is still my favorite annual holiday. New Orleans is where my heart feels at home and I pilgrimage back at least twice a year.

My first visit post-Katrina was Mardi Gras, 2006, a mere six months after the storm’s devastation made world news. I was tense before
